These baby moccasins, given by a
Celilo Native elder—arrows in opposite directions:
“One foot will take you towards your people,
One foot will take you away.”
Away in Coast Guard taps and logger’s corks.
In farmer’s spats and seaman’s flats. Ever
looking to moments of sole simply on the
earth, no barrier at all. Knowing grit and
moss and waters' rush.
